Ceiling leak causes can range from a simple plumbing failure to a roofing problem that has been allowing water into the building for weeks. The visible spot is often only where water finally found a path downward, not where the leak began.

What the Stain Can Tell You

A stain that appears during plumbing use points more strongly to pipes, fixtures, or drains.

Yellow or brown rings usually indicate that water has soaked through drywall and dried more than once. A fresh, wet area may feel soft or cool to the touch. Peeling paint, bubbling texture, sagging drywall, and a musty odor all suggest moisture has been present long enough to cause material damage.

What to Do When a Ceiling Starts Leaking
